Sequins and songs at drag legend Glenda Jackson's memorial

Hundreds have worn sequins and feathers to a colourful celebration of the life of Glenda Jackson at a service for the late drag legend in Newcastle.

Glen Oliver, who performed in drag as Glenda Jackson for over 50 years, died on May 27 after battling cancer.

Glenda’s passing sparked hundreds of tributes from people all over Australia, remembering Glenda as a true local icon.

On Sunday (June 23), around 300 punters packed a “celebration of life” service at Glenda’s longtime local Carrington Bowling Club.

Longtime friend and performer Sandy Bottom hosted the service, at the club where Glenda hosted Big Balls Bingo for several years. Sandy said Glenda would have been thrilled by the turnout.

“This morning I looked out the window and I saw a wonderful, beautiful rainbow. That’s Glenda,” Sandy said.

“She reminded me that I’m here today sharing in her wonderful rainbow. It’s the legends of our community that started our rainbow.

“She brought colour into our community, but also recognition for our community. Glenda was nothing more than a legend. That’s why we’re here to celebrate her.”

Sandy told the crowd Glenda’s talent on stage had changed her own outlook on performing and across Glenda’s decades in drag there probably wasn’t a Newcastle venue she hadn’t performed at.

The showgirl’s first public performance was at the Merewether Leagues Club where Glen adopted the stage name Glenda Jackson.

She later worked with Carlotta and the legendary Kings Cross drag show Les Girls.

Back in Newcastle, Glenda herself also became a permanent fixture on stage at Newcastle’s The Star Hotel, also working offstage as a bartender.

Tits and feathers at Glenda Jackson’s celebration of life

On Sunday, speakers delivered tributes and anecdotes as a lineup of drag queens and showgirls, picked by Glenda, took to the stage to honour the drag queen’s five-decade career.

Sandy Bottom told the crowd on Sunday that Glenda personally requested the showgirls “bring us tits and feathers” at the memorial, in true Glenda style.

“Glenda said she wanted sequins, shoes and song and that’s exactly what she’s done,” she said.

Friends at the service remembered Glenda for “setting the bar so high” on the local gay scene. They remembered Glenda’s “style, her looks, her dazzling costumes and her signature headwear,” which Glenda made herself.

Longtime friend Ian Tufrey said Glenda Jackson was also a generous community advocate and cherished mentor to both budding drag performers and gay people “in times that were not great for us”.

“She’s helped so many young people, whether in taking up drag or even feeling comfortable about being gay,” he said.

“Without entertainers like her, our lives wouldn’t be the same.”

Map of Amity Park

So I did a bunch of research and traced over the map the GIW had in DCMH and extended it to try and build a map of Amity Park. I also paid close attention to locations and places named in canon. I am by no means an artist, map maker, photoshop pro, or civil engineer; I just wanted a general reference map for the phandom to use.

Here is where I place Amity Park. We know AP isn’t in Michigan or Wisconsin, but is most likely a day drive away from Madison (Bitter Reunions). AP is a decent sized city of itself, so I can see it being an outskirt of a large city like Chicago. Lancer mentions the Northwestern Testing, and Northwestern University is in Evanston, IL, which is why I placed it where it is.

LIST OF PLACES (in great detail):

Every city needs it’s basic services: energy supply, water supply, sewage, and trash/recycling. These of course are located more on the edge of the city, as they need a large amount of space and are typically isolated.

I placed a local airport in the city as well. Typically you would fly out of one of Chicago’s airports anyway, but private planes (Vlad, Mansons, etc.) can take off and land here.

University of Amity Park is located at the north side of the city, and is home to a Nasty Burger location, an LGBT Center, and is probably near a gas station. The blocks surrounding the campus are more student housing.

Near the University, we have the Science Center, Axion Labs, a Mental Institute, and the Museum, as a lot of research from the University would go into those places.

In the more isolated areas, we have the Penitentiary, the abandoned North Mercy Hospital, and the GIW Headquarters.

The Zoo is located on the north side of the park and is also close to the University for research purposes.

The Observatory is also located in a more isolated area, so you can actually see the stars without a bunch of light pollution.

Going into the center of town, where most things are actually located:

A community college, which is near the internet cafe where Danny and Tucker play games, a gas station, a liquor store, a thrift shop, a Planned Parenthood, Java Jive (the coffee shop), a tech store, and a gym.

We also have a shoe store, the hunting goods store and Guitar Palace that Skulker and Ember take over in Reign Storm, the U-Ship Box Store the Box Ghost takes over, a barber and a hardware store.

There is a hair salon, tanning salon, and nail salon, where Paulina frequents. There is also Elmer’s Pharmacy, a dentist office, a law office, the TV repair store, butcher shop, and pet store (which we see next to each other in an episode), a toy store, and a vet office.

Government buildings include City Hall, a public library, a court house, a DMV, a bus station (for all mass transit in the city), a community center (likely where town halls are located and other smaller events; Ida plays bingo here every week), and a retirement home.

There is also the post office, Amity Park Fire Department, a bank, the 24K Jewelry shop, a nearby ice cream shop, and another Nasty Burger location (this is the one right by Casper High that the trio usually hangs at). Also an animal shelter, a grocery store, and a pizza joint.

Education: there is a preschool and daycare, the elementary school, a playground/park, the middle school (yes, a Beetlejuice reference), and Casper High. Casper High campus also has the track, a fieldhouse, and the football field.

Moving towards Amity Park Mall:

Bucky’s Music Mega Store, an apartment complex, Amity Park Police Department, a bookstore, doctor clinic, gas station, a Denny’s (where Phight Club happens), Material Grill restaurant, the mini golf course and bowling alley, Freddy Fazbear’s (which is actually a horror video game, but here it’s a kids pizza place like Chuck E. Cheese), a furniture store, a party supply store, and the movie theater (which is Marmel’s Multiplex 22, Amity Park Multiplex, and Googolplex Cinemas...it seems that they go to the same movie theater throughout the series and the names just change, or these could also be other movie theaters in the area (like near the college campus). I just picked Multiplex 22 cause it sounded very mall-y).

Along the interstate, there’s a pawn shop, a publishing house (which somehow prints all 5 of Amity Park’s newspapers), a homeless shelter, the diner, Safe House Motel, a laundromat, the 89¢ Store (a nod to Fanning the Flames), and the car dealership.

Also near the mall is Amity Arena, which hosts concerts, sports events, and other large entertainment events. There is a hotel near both the arena and the hospital (the one that isn’t abandoned and haunted). Towards the outskirts of the hospital, there’s a trailer park; north a few blocks is the TV station, where News 4 is headquartered. There’s also a construction site near Amity Arena, but that kinda went out the window when Undergrowth hit.

On the other side of town, we have:

A-Mart, a convenience store. I named it like this because it can be like an offshoot of KMart, but A for Amity!

Floody Waters, right off the interstate.

North of Floody Waters, East of Casper High, we have the main residences: the Foley household and only a couple blocks away is Fenton Works.

There’s also another gas station and the Amity Park Radio Station nearby. There’s also a private school near ultra posh Polter Heights, but the A-Listers attend Casper High because the private school doesn’t have a football or cheerleading team.

Moving into Polter Heights and the surrounding area:

The Polter Heights Golf Course and Country Club are exclusive to those in the neighborhood, as well as their private neighborhood pool; members only.

The Mayor’s Mansion (eventually Vlad’s) is located in here too.

All of the A-Listers’ houses are of course in this neighborhood, as well as Val’s previous residence and the Fenton’s temporary mansion from Living Large (which is of course right next door to Vlad, but with some distance, because the rich are always socially distancing with their big houses).

Polter Heights is adjacent to a bunch of farmland (this is the midwest, we like cows and stuff), and there is a church close by as well.

Just outside Polter Heights is the Manson Mansion (with Sam’s greenhouse). Lucky for Sam, the Skulk and Lurk Books and an occult shop are just down the street. The Manson residence is also near a funeral home and graveyard (how did Sam get so lucky? Oh, because I love her), a synagogue, Mario’s restaurant, and a dry cleaners.

We get more spacious as we get away from the center of town!

Along the shore of Lake Eerie, there are the docks which are home to many warehouses, including the mattress factory.

Also along the shoreline, there is a pier which doubles as an amusement park (think kinda like Navy Pier in Chicago in comparison) and alongside the pier is the public beach area.

Camp Skull and Crossbones is located on the other side of Lake Eerie, and the fishing area is more on the north side of the lake. Lake Eerie is not one of the Great Lakes, it’s just its own thing in Amity Park.

Back towards the park, we have event grounds space, which is where Circus Gothica is located, as well as the Meet Swap and flea market. Basically whatever rotating event hits town, it comes right here. Just next door is a theatre (for music, opera, Broadway, etc.). There is also the third and final Nasty Burger location in AP.

This is all surrounding the actual park Amity Park, which has a pond, a big fountain, and also hosts that really big hill that overlooks City Hall.

On the south side, across the bridge and over the interstate is Elmerton, where Val currently is resided.

All the other blocks are filled with more office buildings, apartment complexes, houses, and businesses, but all of the main places are already listed and placed.

Finally, yes, I did name some places for myself and my friends because they’re great and they deserve it. These include Steph’s (mine) Occult Shoppe, Nick’s Liquor Emporium (@ecto-american), Lexx R Us Toystore (@lexosaurus and appropriately named after the Lexxpocalypse), Laz’s Law Offices LLC (@kinglazrus), Dee’s Dentistry (@qlinq-qhost), Lily’s Looks Thrift Store (@dannyphantomisameme), Ceci’s Funeral Home (@ceciliaspen), Vic’s Amusement Park (@babypop-phantom), and Reverie Books (@wastefulreverie).

MEET SCOTTY

1. Full Name?

Scott Allan Donovan.

2. Preferred Names or Nicknames?

Scotty, Scotty Boy, Scotty-O (he thinks people call him the last two things but they don’t.)

3. What does their name mean? Does it have any significance in their family? Do they like their name?

According to a quick Google search, Scott means“person from Scotland” or “Gaelic speaker” and Allan (weirdly enough also Celtic, I’m shook) means“handsome, cheerful”. The name Scott has no significance in their family (his mom just had a thing for Scott Summers) but Allan is the name of his grandmother’s late husband RIP. Scotty likes his name for the most part. He just thinks the name Scott is too cool for someone like him, so he likes that his granny made the executive decision to add the -y in there.

4. Age and Date of Birth?

He is 17 years old and born on October 4, 2002.

5. Gender and Pronouns?

Cis Male. He/him.

6. Hometown?

He is from Ligonier, PA.

7. Does your character fit into any well known archetypes or tropes?

No Social Skills, I Just Want a Friend. He’s impressionable! He’s hyperactive! He just wants to be loved and is tired of being bullied!

8. How long have they been at Broadripple?

Scotty has been at Broadripple since the start of the new school year.

9. What led them to apply to Broadripple? Was it a decision made by them or by their parents/guardians or somewhere in between?

His grandmother. She came into a lot of settlement money after getting injured at the local bowling alley and she decided to invest it in Scotty’s education. She knows he doesn’t have the easiest time at public school and is subject to a lot of bullying, so maybe a private school full of God-fearing kids will do just the trick. :)))))))))

10. Whether they’ve been at Broadripple four days or four years, do they enjoy it? Do they like Broadripple?

He does! So far, Scotty has no qualms about Broadripple. He just thinks the uniform feels really stuffy and the classes are way harder than his one brain cell can handle. Also, he doesn’t know how to tie a tie. But those are personal problems, he likes the school just fine!

11. What house are they in? Do they care very much about their house?

Keough. He doesn’t understand how the whole house thing works -- it feels like a Hogwarts thing without the cool hat process -- but he’s down for whatever if someone tells him he needs to dress in yellow and cheer really loud.

12. Who do they share a dorm with, or are they on their own for the moment? What are they like to live with? Are they clean or messy? Early risers or night owls?

Scott shares a dorm with Harlan Dupre and couldn’t be happier about it. He thinks Harlan is really nice and has super rad hair. Scott has a lot of nervous energy so he’s always moving and that doesn’t make him the easiest to live with. He’s aware of it though and he does his best to keep his antics to a minimum. He’s a messy boi but he doesn’t mean to be. He makes it a point to make sure his hurricane aftermath stays on his side. Scott is an early riser and a night owl, which is very weird. He functions on little to no sleep and it’s truly The Worst™ but he’s learned to live with it.

13. How is your character’s dorm decorated? Is it bare or bursting at the seems with personality? Any particular sentimental items from home?

Bursting with personality! Scotty has never been outside of Ligonier in his life, so to make sure he doesn’t miss it, he basically took most of the contents of his bedroom and brought it with him. On his wall, you’ll find an Empire Strikes Back poster, a retro Pac Man poster, a vintage X-Men comic poster signed by *Stan Lee, and several photos of himself and his grandma, himself and his grandma’s Bingo group, himself and the most voted Employee of the Month at their local grocery store, Merle. There’s a real cute photo strip of he and his grandma that they took last year at the fair stuck on there too. Closest to his pillow so he can look at every night before while he tries to sleep is a worn post card from Wyoming. It’s his prized possession. Yes, even more important to him than a vintage X-Men comic poster signed by the one and only, Stan Lee.

*It wasn’t signed by Stan Lee. His grandma signed it and told him it was though.

14. What is their favourite subject at school? Do they even have a favourite? Why?

Creative Writing because literally everything else is hard.

15. Are they involved in any clubs? Which ones?

Rock/Jazz Band - Scotty may be incompetent in most things but he is one hell of a drummer boy.

Broadripple Unsolved - Because he gets curious about a lot and asks about everything. But honestly, he probably just saw Conny and Ezra sitting around with each other and was like hey dudes! and plopped himself down.

Sacristan Club - It was the first poster he saw on the notice board and the nun who explained it to him talked it up, so he was like okay! :) but he doesn’t know what’s going on and he’s just pretending and trying his best until someone tells him he can stop.

Cinema Club - Because Conny. And also it was the second poster he saw.

16. How does your character feel about Broadripple’s Unofficial Clubs? Do they know about them? Are they a part of any of them?

BBC - Doesn’t really understand them but he’s #terrified because they remind him of every bully who has ever duct taped him to a bathroom stall.

Broadripple Unsolved - Loves it, is part of it, would die for it.

Chastity Club- They told him they have cookies and he doesn’t know any better.

17. Does your character participate in any sports? If so, what made them join the team?

Not at the moment!

18. What afternoon activities does your character do? Do they just do the one mandatory one or are they involved in multiple? Why?

Seasonal Music Production! Just one! Because he didn’t know he could be involved in more!

19. Do they miss their home when they’re at Broadripple? Do they often go home for the weekends or do they only go home during holiday breaks?

Yes times 9 million. He misses his granny and all her Bingo friends and Merle from the local grocery store. They’re not well-off by any means and it took his grandmother coming into a large sum of money from an injury so they could even afford the next two years of his schooling at BA, so he’s definitely only going to go home during holiday breaks.

20. Did your character know Izzy De Santis or Maggie Monroe?

Nope. But he thinks it’s super Spooks McGooks that they just poof’d without explanation like that. He told his grandmother about it and she told him to keep his emergency scissors under his pillow.

21. Has your character heard of Edith Lynch? Do they know the story?

He and his Gran came across an article on Bing when they were looking up Broadripple and it put hella chills in his bones. But his grandmother assured him that it was a long time ago and that“people were different in the 80s”.

22. How does your character feel about Nighmore? Have they noticed the recently closed shops yet?

Scotty thinks Nighmore is really nice and he likes that no one seems to turn him away when he tries to talk to them. Yeah, he noticed it and was really :\ about it. He’s been trying to recreate his friendship with Merle the grocery man with someone from Hill’s Wholefoods and it kinda sucked that the dude just kapoof’d one day.

23. Have you made any aesthetic Pinterest boards/WeHeartIt collections for this character? Or playlists? Anything you would like to share!

Date Crasher

A sequel to Party Crasher

Loki x Reader

Summary: After reuniting with Loki it seems karma has finally caught up with you. Your dates keep being crashed and right at the good parts too.

"Loki." You moaned breathless into the god's mouth. He chuckled deeply continuing his ministrations under your shirt.

It was getting harder to resist the god, despite the fact you were in the public restroom of a bowling alley. It was just so hard to get time alone.

You moaned shamelessly as Loki nibbled and pulled on your lower lip whilst doing the same thing to your nipple with his cool fingertips.

"We need to stop," you try again pulling your head away only for Loki to follow, effectively pinning you further to the countertop. "Loki seriously they're going to come-"

"Brother." And here they were. Loki didnt even bother removing his hand from your shirt at the sight of Thor in the doorway.

"Leave us alone brother. We do not wish to play your game." Loki all but growled through his sexual frustration.

"Yes, I figured that out when I threw a bowling ball right through your projection." Thor explained before moving into the bathroom placing a forceful hand on Loki's shoulder and pulling him away from you. Your body shuddered at the sudden absence of heat.

You watched the two brothers leave the small lavatory and let out an audible sigh. You pulled yourself off the counter and turned to face the mirror Loki had pressed you into not minutes before.

You and Loki had been at the edge of madness since the day you had been reunited by Thor and Maria. Somehow the two of then got it in their heads that if you and Loki were left alone together you would somehow ruin whatever they thought the two of you could have. The problem was you needed sex, both of you did. It was an undeniable part of what brought you together in the first place. So you snuck around as best you could when every date came with a chaperone.

You made sure your shirt was straighted and your hair was smooth before leaving the quiet bathroom. Beyond the door was the sound of heavy bowling balls knocking down pins and eighties music crackling on outdated speakers. At the far end of the building sat Maria, Thor, and Loki. You approached your group slowly, passing the only other group, an elderly women's league, on the way. They had been pleasant company, distracting Thor long enough for you to head off to the restroom and for Loki to join soon thereafter.

As you got closer you could see the conversation happening entirely in Loki's face. It was the same lecture received every time the two of you were caught. 'Stop trying to fuck on every available surface. Both of you need to learn how to date like normal people. You have intimacy issues. Blah blah blah.' It didn't matter what they said or how many times they say it, neither of you cared to listen. You smiled as you sat down just outside of the discourse, finding humor in Loki's not so subtle bored and exasperated expressions.

"Don't think you're getting out of this (Y/N)." Maria's stern tone and the sound of your name pulled your attention away from the sultry look your raven haired date was sending your way.

"All I did was go to the bathroom." You threw your hands up in mock surrender and put on your best 'I'm innocent' expression.

"From now on we go to the bathroom together." Maria said ignoring your weak defense.

"Great we'll add it to the list," you snapped back easily, "along with the chaperoned dates and living together. You're smothering me!"

You're shrill blowup was met with silence and raised eyebrows, even a couple of the elderly women a few lanes over gave you a look.

Maria gave you a withering glare. Paired with her uncanny ability to make you feel like a child she successfully silenced you. You brought your feet up into the creaky orange chair, your bowling shoes a size too large hung amusingly over the edge.

"Its your turn (Y/N)." Loki murmured, breaking a silence that was running a tad too long. You looked up at him and nodded before leaving the chair and heading toward the lanes.

-

"I guess I'll see you later." You grumbled. You and Loki stood in front of your front door hand in hand. Maria and Thor were generous enough to allow some privacy as you said goodbye after each date; Maria already inside the apartment and Thor down the hall, far enough to offer confidentiality but close enough to keep an eye on Loki.

"Yes I wonder where we will go on our next group date." Sarcasm dripped from Loki's smirking lips making you smile.

"Hmmm maybe laser tag? Or it could be some wholesome bingo night. Nah, I'll put my money on strip club." You joked, pulling on Loki's trusty hoodie playfully. He placed his hand upon your hips as he laughed. You liked to make him laugh. You looked forward to it sometimes more than the making out in public restrooms. His face just lit up with his brilliant smile and the way his eyes crinkled around the edges. God you were getting soft!

"Wherever it is," Loki said lowly, his face losing the smile you had just been admiring, "I'll be there."

The kiss you shared was slow and sweet and entirely unlike the one you shared in the bathroom earlier. You both pulled away, though not easily, it would never be easy to pull away from Loki. With one last squeeze of his arms around your waist he let you go. You watched Loki approach Thor and enter the elevator moments later. Only when the door closed did you enter your apartment. Closing the front door you leant against it heavily and shouted to your roommate.

"Maria, just let me get laid you bitch!"

I still don't know how I feel about this sequel so if you like it I'll keep going!

토토검증업체 Wars - Beating Vegas (Gambling Documentary) #5011

Both the Parisian and Rouennais court cards were named after historical and mythological heroes and heroines. Within suits, there are regional or national variations called "standard patterns." Because these patterns are in the public domain, this allows multiple card manufacturers to recreate them. In addition, a backdrop of underworld ties made the nation's gambling capital a place many were wary of visiting. The random number generators used by casinos are 35-year-old technology, so they’re reliable and trustworthy, but table games were designed to be played with real dealers. Live dealer Caribbean Stud Poker restores the game to the way it first gained its popularity. Cutting edge streaming video keeps the camera on the cards the entire time they are dealt.

The 19th century also saw the development of a vast industry in cards which were meant to appeal to the public simply by being attractive-or topical-with courts drawn from literary, historical or contemporary figures. http://query.nytimes.com/search/sitesearch/?action=click&contentCollection&region=TopBar&WT.nav=searchWidget&module=SearchSubmit&pgtype=Homepage#/모바일바둑이 There may be players who are lucky and get ahead for a period of time, but in the long run these winning streaks are eroded away. In France, card decks were suited with coeurs, piques, trèfles, carreaux - or hearts, spades, clubs, and diamonds. These French suits influenced a number of countries across Europe. If the dealer does not show an Ace/King, hands playing the jackpot must be turned over, face up, and shown to the dealer and table. If the player is not playing the jackpot prize, the cards are not shown.

Each Live Caribbean Stud Poker game begins with players placing a bet (or ‘ante’) in front of the seat they occupy. This is a mandatory bet before the cards are dealt. Minimum and maximum bet limits apply. ery few examples of early English playing cards survive to this day. One of the reasons is that most of them were of such bad quality they simply didn't endure the centuries to appear in the modern day. Little, therefore is known about English manufacturers. The best known are Hewson from the 17th Century and Blanchard from the 18th Century. This example by L. Hewson shows the standard smudged beneath crude workmanship. Already by 1680 some important elements of the Rouen design had disappeared or were blurred beyond recognition, while others, though present, were much simpler and less detailed in form.A comparison between this rendition by Hewson with the Rouen Pattern clearly shows its heritage. Blackjack is a fixture in American casinos and trente et quarante in the French. Each spin of the roulette wheel is independent of the spins that came before and has the same fifty-fifty chance of being red or black.

A nonbanked game is one in which the payout and the house's cut depend on the number of players or the amount that is bet, not the outcome of the game. A straight gets you 4:1, three of a kind gets you 3:1 and two pairs will return 2:1. Finally, one pair will pay just as much as one A/K – 1:1. What makes a Caribbean Stud Poker special is the presence of a progressive jackpot and any player can qualify for a chance to win the grand prize as soon as they place a chip in the jackpot circle. If a matching sequence of symbols appeared when the reels stopped, the player won. Before that, the card counting players had their estimation system when they had an advantage, but the process was spontaneous.

Indigenous Japanese games rely on principles of 'matching' (involving a highly literary version of Snap) or on games involving cards which ultimately stem from European models -heavily disguised to evade prohibitions on gambling. Forget Vegas: Macau's casino revenues beat Vegas's five times over in 2012. Unlike Vegas, which makes most of its money in penny slots, most of the money generated in Macau (75 percent!) comes from high rollers making huge bets at table games in V.I.P. rooms.Shooters may keep rolling after crapping out; the dice are only required to be passed if a shooter sevens out (rolls a seven after a point has been established). European history is riddled with edicts, decrees, and encyclicals banning and condemning gambling, which indirectly testify to its popularity in all strata of society.

False Alarm or Just Practicing – Tongue-in-cheek term used when one calls bingo but is mistaken. In January 2017, Quebec announced that it would similarly re-allocate and cut its VLTs from 12,000 to under 10,000 over the next two years, including making the number of sites and machines present in a region proportional to population, and focus more on placing them in leisure venues such as billiard halls and bowling alleys to "promote socialization and group entertainment". 우리카지노계열 For example, (6–4, 4–6) would be a "10 easy". The 4, 6, 8 or 10 can be made both hard and easy ways. Since the legalization of gaming in 1847, Macau has been the pioneer of the gaming industry in regard to Asian casinos.

If a 7 comes before the point is rolled, the odds pay at true odds of 1-to-2 if 4 or 10 is the point, 2-to-3 if 5 or 9 is the point, or 5-to-6 if 6 or 8 is the point. Players compete against one another to be the first to have a winning arrangement for the prize or jackpot. After a winner is declared, the players clear their number cards of the tiles and the game host begins a new round of play.In the same way that a come bet is similar to a pass line bet, a don't come bet is similar to a don't pass bet. Sega Sammy Holdings is the owner and/or license holder for the majority of franchises on the list.

Other casinos will take the bet on the pass line after a point has been established, known as put betting, which is a disadvantage to the player (since the seven is the most common roll and likely to happen before the "point"). The American game was developed in the gambling dens across the new territories where makeshift games had been set up, whereas the French game evolved with style and leisure in Monte Carlo.Although the gaming industry now provides distinguished product contents and contains service consumers from different market segments and with diverse lifestyles, it still satisfies the varied needs and desires of subjects in the same tourist locations. Each 11-to-1 street that covers three numbers may have $3,000 wagered on it. Each 5-to-1 six-line may have $6,000 wagered on it.

N.S. reports no new cases of COVID-19; seven active cases

Health officials in Nova Scotia identified no new cases of COVID-19 on Saturday. One previously reported case is now considered recovered, dropping the total number of active cases in the province to seven.

Following an announcement on Friday in which the province announced many easing restrictions – coming into effect on Monday – Nova Scotia Premier Stephen McNeil reminded residents to stay safe.

“I am so proud of Nova Scotians for the work they’ve done to contain the virus and keep our case numbers low,” said McNeil in a release issued on Saturday. “I want to remind everyone that provincial restrictions aren’t changing until Monday, so let’s keep the current measures in mind and have a safe weekend.”

Chief medical officer of health Dr. Robert Strang also asked to Nova Scotians to stay on guard.

“I am pleased to see our new case numbers remain low to no new cases,” said Dr. Strang. “This is a direct result of the commitment Nova Scotians have to keeping our communities safe. I encourage everyone to remain vigilant so we can continue to see these low cases of COVID-19 in our province.”

EASED RESTRICTIONS COMING MONDAY

On Friday, the province announced the easing of many public health restrictions, which will come into effect on Monday until at least March 7.

Effective Monday at 12 a.m. until 11:59 p.m. March 7:

retail businesses can operate at 75 per cent capacity

fitness facilities can operate at 75 per cent capacity and must maintain three metres between people during high-intensity activities both indoors and outdoors

recognized businesses and organizations can resume hosting events with 150 people outdoors, or 50 per cent of a venue’s capacity to a maximum of 100 indoors

these events must stop any food or alcohol service by 10 p.m. and end by 11 p.m.

these events include social events, arts and culture events, sport and recreation events, special events, festivals, faith gatherings, weddings with receptions, and funerals with visitation and receptions

these events include bingo, darts and other similar activities hosted by licensed and unlicensed establishments

these gathering limits also apply to meetings and training hosted by private businesses or organizations, provincial and municipal government, first responder organizations, mental health and addictions support groups, and organized clubs

organized clubs can host activities for all ages and follow the day camp guidelines to have cohorts of up to 15 within the larger indoor or outdoor gathering limit

spectators are allowed at events, including sports games and practices and arts and culture rehearsals and performances, except when they are held at schools

large facilities that already have approved plans can resume hosting events with multiple groups of 100 that are kept separate with their own entrances and exits and their own washrooms

Centre 200 in Sydney and Scotiabank Centre in Halifax can have multiple groups of 150

On Friday, McNeil added the restrictions can be reinstated at any moment depending on the outcome.

“This is a test for all of us,” said McNeil on Friday in a press release. “We're keeping our cases down, but the moment that we see a shift or a surge and change in the number of cases, we will not hesitate to bring back restrictions. It really is up to all of us.”

GATHERING LIMITS

In a release issued on Friday, the province also noted the general gathering limit remains at 10 people. This limit applies to household and informal gatherings and events that are not hosted by a recognized business or organization.

There is no change to hours for restaurants and licensed establishments. These businesses must stop service at 10 p.m. and close at 11 p.m. There will be no exceptions to close later when there are special sports events, such as the Super Bowl. The province notes the hours also apply to all types of gatherings hosted by recognized businesses and organizations as appropriate.

Sports teams and individual competitors are still restricted to playing and competing with other teams and people with whom they routinely play or compete.

N.S. CASE DATA

The Nova Scotia Health Authority’s labs completed 1,353 tests on Friday.

Since Oct. 1, Nova Scotia has completed 169,108 tests. There have been 495 positive COVID-19 cases and no deaths. Cases have ranged in age from under 10 to over 70. Four-hundred-and-eighty-eight cases are now resolved.

There is currently one person in hospital due to COVID-19, this person is in the intensive care unit.

Since the pandemic began, Nova Scotia has completed 292,286 tests. Cumulatively, there have been 1,584 confirmed cases of COVID-19, with 1,512 cases considered recovered.

The province has reported 65 COVID-19 related deaths since the pandemic began, with an average age of 80.

Since the beginning of the pandemic, the province’s confirmed cases range in age from under 10 to over 90.

Fifty-eight per cent of cases are female, and 42 per cent are male.

There are cases confirmed across the province, but most have been identified in the Central Zone, which contains the Halifax Regional Municipality.

The provincial government says cumulative cases by zone may change as data is updated in Panorama, the province’s electronic information system.

The numbers reflect where a person lives and not where their sample was collected.

Western Zone: 94 cases (1 active case)

Central Zone: 1,284 cases (5 active cases)

Northern Zone: 127 cases (0 active cases)

Eastern Zone: 79 cases (1 active case)

STATE OF EMERGENCY EXTENDED

The provincial state of emergency, which was first declared on March 22, 2020, has been extended to Feb. 21, 2021.

VACCINE UPDATE

Nova Scotia's COVID-19 online dashboard now provides an update on the amount of vaccines that have been administered to date.

As of Friday, 17,295 doses of COVID-19 vaccines have been administered so far, with 4,681 Nova Scotians having received a second dose.

Of the vaccines administered, 10,251 were health care workers, and 1,687 were long-term care residents.

NOVA SCOTIANS ENCOURAGED TO SEEK ASYMPTOMATIC TESTING

Public health is strongly encouraging Nova Scotians to seek asymptomatic COVID-19 testing, particularly if they have attended several social interactions, even with their own social circle.

COVID-19 tests can be booked through the province's online self-assessment tool, or by calling 811.

People can also visit one of Nova Scotia’s many rapid pop-up testing sites that continue to operate throughout the province.

COVID ALERT APP

Canada’s COVID-19 Alert app is available in Nova Scotia.

The app, which can be downloaded through the Apple App Store or Google Play, notifies users if they may have been exposed to someone who has tested positive for COVID-19.

LIST OF SYMPTOMS

Anyone who experiences a fever or new or worsening cough, or two or more of the following new or worsening symptoms, is encouraged to take an online test or call 811 to determine if they need to be tested for COVID-19:

Sore throat

Headache

Via my honey, who's played here countless times and COVID-19 pandemic shutdown threatens small Detroit bars, music venues - Photo gallery of PJ's Lager House

As one of Detroit’s leading rock venues, Paul Ryder's PJ’s Lager House helped launch the early careers of bands like The White Stripes and the Von Bondies.

It withstood the recession of the auto bankruptcy and foreclosure crisis.

But it can’t beat COVID-19.

Ryder has exhausted $178,000 in loans and grants since April, and a second shutdown of bars and restaurants that started last month now puts the fate of his Corktown bar in jeopardy.

On Nov. 15, after a COVID-19 exposure put the Lager House into quarantine, Ryder thought the bar's doors had closed for good. That his dream of running a small bar where local bands can play was over.

A last ditch effort to raise funds may reopen the venue in February. Fans of the Lager House have raised more than $24,000, which would keep the bar alive for a few more months.

But the pandemic is far from over, and months of uncertainty await. The longer it continues — and the longer the resulting shut down orders stay in place — the more losses the Lager House and other small watering holes will sustain, a series of financial blows that put in doubt whether these venues will endure.

Losing these neighborhood bars and clubs has the potential to cripple Detroit's music scene.

What a shame.

“If you had 10 reasons that PJ’s was gonna go out of business, the pandemic was not on the list,” Ryder told me recently. “I cannot believe this is the way we’re going to go down. It’s unfathomable.”

In mid-November, Gov. Gretchen Whitmer shut down a multitude of venues, intended to limit interaction with people to slow the rising coronavirus cases in the state. Outside of bars, casinos, movie theaters, indoor ice rinks, bowling alleys, bingo halls also are temporarily shut down. So is indoor dining at restaurants.

U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention Director Dr. Robert Redfield said Wednesday this winter could be the worst public health crisis in the nation’s history. He predicts nearly 450,000 deaths by February.

“To make it clear, the governor has done the right thing. If anything, she should have kept us locked down longer the first time,” Ryder said. “She’s done a heck of a job trying her best to keep people safe and not have people die.” ...

#35: Donate $25 to a charity once a month for the year

January: Search and Rescue (SAR) Alberta. SAR is a volunteer organized and run charitable organization that coordinates on ground and inland search and rescue missions. SAR provides support for police, fire, emergency response, security, and first aid. SAR volunteers are trained to find and rescue people all over Alberta - lost campers, hikers, skiers, children, and people with Alzheimers. ($25 on 16/01/17)

February: Second Chance Animal Rescue Society. SCARS is a non-profit charity that takes in animals that are homeless/unwanted/slated for euthanasia, provides medical assessment and treatment, and helps find forever homes for those animals. In addition, all animals that are under SCARS care are spayed/neutered, vaccinated, and micro-chipped while under their care. SCARS relies on money raised through memberships, sponsorships, grants, and donations. 100% of donated money goes to SCARS operations (veterinary costs and equipment, food, housing, and medical aid). There are many ways to donate to SCARS - fostering an animal, donating money, donating items from their wish list, donating your car, volunteering, donating through United Way, donating Aeroplan miles. If you donate through ATB cares, they will add 15%. There is also an app for iOS and Android called ResQwalk - all you do is download the app, find SCARS in their charities to support, and make sure the app is on when going for walks. SCARS website (scarscare.ca) has an education section that provides links to education for reporting animal abuse, what to do with lost or found pets, pet safekeeping programs for pets belonging to individuals fleeing domestic violence, pet re-homing, behavior and training for both dogs and cats, care and health information, information for disabled pets, pet safety, and animal welfare. And while SCARS is an Alberta based charity, there are many organizations like them all over the place. Also, if you are looking to adopt a dog or cat, then you can adopt from SCARS or one of the many animal shelters in your area. ($25 on 18/02/2017)

March: Basically Babies. Basically Babies is a registered charity that works to provide for the basic outfitting needs of newborn babies from families in extreme need. Families are given a complete first year’s wardrobe, including clothing, outerwear, blankets, toys, storybooks, sleepers, undershirts, footwear, and other essentials. There are a couple of ways to contribute to this charity. At the time of writing this they are in need of gently-used or new snowsuits (sizes 0-24 mo), large sun hats (sizes 12-24 mo), shoes (sizes 0-6), slippers (0-24 mo), mittens (0-24 mo), tights (0-24 mo), sleepers (0-24 mo), large undershirts (12-24 mo), toys, stuffed animals (up to 24″), baby books, receiving blankets, and towels. Or, of course, you can donate money to the charity. ($25 on 15/03/2017)

April: Pilgrims Hospice. Pilgrims Hospice is a charitable program that provides supportive and compassionate family centered care to enhance the quality and dignity of life for those diagnosed with a progressive, life-threatening illness as well as solace to those who are bereaved. The programs and services they provide support psychological, social and spiritual well-being, and physical symptoms. PHS began in 1997 and has expanded quite a bit since then. Tracking the COVID19 Shutdowns

We’ve seen a lot of disruptions to our daily lives recently as governments everywhere respond to the SARS-CoV-2 outbreak since patient zero reportedly contracted the disease in China’s Hubei province on November 17th, 2019.

Across the globe and within the United States, governments have been shuttering industries, closing public spaces, overriding many existing laws and regulations, and issuing stay-at-home orders for huge swaths of their populations, if not everyone. If keeping up with changing policies was hard before, it’s all but impossible now.

In response to this rapidly changing policy climate, we’re temporarily shifting our focus to keeping track of how various governments are responding to COVID19 pandemic.

Due to how rapidly things are changing on the ground, this list is not exhaustive. It contains everything we’ve noted, but may overlook some changes (especially at local levels). If you see something we’ve missed, contact us at [emailprotected] and we’ll add it here.

Definitions of ‘non-essential businesses’ vary slightly from state to state, but generally follow the CISA Guidelines issued March 19th, 2020. School closures generally refer to physical structure closures and a shift to remote lessons. Check the linked orders for specific details, or ask us.

Check back for updates as we will update this post regularly.

New Executive Orders Affect DMV Operations, Prohibit Certain Gatherings of More than 50 People, and Direct Entertainment Facilities and Hair Salons to Close

The Governor issued Executive Order No. 119 on Friday, which orders the closure of many Division of Motor Vehicles (DMV) Driver License Offices, the postponement of certain DMV hearings, and the suspension of road tests for newly licensed drivers. Today, the Governor issued Executive Order No. 120, which prohibits mass gatherings of more than 50 people, orders the closure of entertainment facilities and personal care and grooming businesses, and extends the closure of public schools through May 15, 2020.

Executive Order No. 119. Pursuant to G.S. 166A-19.30(a)(1), the Governor ordered the Commissioner of the DMV to:

Limit services at all Driver License Offices to appointment only;

Close Driver License Offices of insufficient size to maintain social distancing, that do not have sufficient staff to serve only appointments, or that otherwise are unable to maintain normal operations due to the pandemic;

Expand service hours at Driver License Offices that remain open;

Discontinue mobile services;

Postpone for 60 days DMV-related hearings not required by statute to be held within a certain number of days; and

Suspend road tests for learner’s permits, provisional driver’s licenses or unrestricted Class C licenses until a determination is made that tests can be conducted with minimal risk of transmission of COVID-19.

The order instructs DMV to the extent practicable to continue to conduct road tests for Class A and Class B licenses and for applicants who must complete a road test due to a medical restriction.

The order also permits DMV and the Department of Public Safety to “interpret flexibly” or waive license renewal requirements for the renewal of commercial driver’s licenses for school bus drivers and activity bus drivers who hold a commercial driver’s license with school bus and passenger endorsements and who are assisting or seeking to assist with emergency-related activities.

These and other provisions of Executive Order 119 were effective Friday, March 20, 2020, and remain in effect for 30 days.

Executive Order No. 120. Today’s executive order amends the provisions of Executive Order No. 117 to prohibit mass gatherings of 50 (was, 100) or more people. Mass gatherings are defined in largely the same manner as before, other than the number of participants covered. The latest executive order does, however, remove restaurants from the list of environments that are excluded from the definition of mass gathering. And it adds child care facilities as environments that are excluded from the prohibition. In other words, the order prohibits more than 50 people from gathering in a restaurant, but does not prohibit more than 50 people from gathering in a child care facility. These amendments are effective at 5 p.m. on Wednesday, March 25, 2020.

The order also orders entertainment facilities without a retail or dining component to close at 5 p.m. on Wednesday, March 25, 2020. These facilities include:

Bingo parlors;

Bowling Alleys;

Indoor exercise facilities;

Health clubs;

Pools;

Live performance venues;

Movie theaters;

Skating rinks;

Spas; and

Gaming establishments.

The order also orders the closure of personal care and grooming businesses as of 5 p.m. on Wednesday, March 25, 2020. Those businesses are defined to include:

Barber shops;

Beauty salons;

Hair salons;

Nail salons;

Massage parlors; and

Tattoo parlors.

As with the provisions of the earlier executive orders, violation of these provisions is a Class 2 misdemeanor. See G.S. 14-288.20A. And the order directs state and local law enforcement officers to enforce its provisions. See G.S. 166A-19.30(a)(2) and 19.30(d).

The order further directs long-term care facilities to restrict visitation (again effective Wednesday, March 25, 2020 at 5 p.m.) and directs that public schools remain closed through Friday, May 15, 2020, unless extended beyond that date.

Confusion and anger on day one of new face mask law

Sainsbury’s, Asda and Costa Coffee all said they would not police new coronavirus laws forcing customers to wear face masks in all shops, stations, banks and post offices from today.

Detailed regulations published last night revealed that the new rules go beyond just shops and also require people to cover their faces in all ‘transport hubs’, shopping centres and petrol stations.

Even customers entering banks – where face coverings are normally discouraged – will be required to don a mask.

Alan Gregg claimed he was at a Tesco store in Balby, South Yorkshire, at 6am for shopping this morning, ‘and the lady at the door said to me face masks are not compulsory in this store’. Tesco has been contacted for comment.

Failure to comply could result in a £100 spot fine, although police forces have indicated they will only respond as a ‘last resort’. Only young children and people with medical conditions affected by a mask are exempt.

A face covering can only be removed in a shop for a small number of reasons, such as allowing staff to check someone’s identity or age or to communicate with a deaf lip reader.

Martin Mac tweeted this picture of people wearing face masks at Williams & Co Trade Only Plumbing and Heating Supplies in Basingstoke, Hampshire, this morning

Shop staff do not have to wear coverings but it is ‘strongly recommended’ that employers ask them to do so unless other precautions such as screens are in place.

The new rules are contentious, with some people finding masks uncomfortable and some libertarians complaining they are being ‘muzzled’ by the state.

What do the new laws on face masks say?

People will need to wear a face covering in shopping centres, banks, takeaway outlets, sandwich shops and supermarkets under new regulations due to come into force in England today.

The Government is bringing new laws into force which could see people who flout the rules get slapped with a fine. Here, we take a look at the new legislation.

– What has changed?

New laws called The Health Protection (Coronavirus, Wearing of Face Coverings in a Relevant Place) (England) Regulations 2020 have been published and will be brought into force on Friday.

– What does the law say?

No-one can go enter certain buildings like shops without a face covering – which covers your face and nose – unless they have a reasonable excuse. Face coverings must be worn in: shops and shopping centres; banks; building societies; credit unions; short-term loan providers; savings clubs and currency exchange offices; anywhere that transmits money by cash or cheque; post offices. A reasonable excuse includes: where a person cannot put on, wear or remove a face covering because of physical or mental illness, impairment or disability; when accompanying someone who relies on lip reading; to avoid or escape harm or injury to themselves or others; in order to eat and drink or take medication.

– Are there any exemptions?

Yes. The rules do not apply to children under the age of 11, employees working in the business in question or public transport staff, police officers, other emergency workers and officials. Premises which are exempt include: restaurants with table service and bars, including those in hotels or members’ clubs; pubs; libraries; law firms; medical and dental practices; vets; cinemas; theatres; museums and galleries; aquariums, indoor zoos or visitor farms, or other indoor tourist, heritage or cultural sites; nightclubs; bingo halls; concert halls, public halls; conference centres; indoor fitness studios; gyms; leisure centres; indoor swimming pools; water parks; bowling alleys; funfairs; theme parks; amusement arcades; indoor soft play areas; indoor sports arenas; casinos; hotels; spas; beauty salons and hairdressers; tattoo and piercing parlours; storage centres; funeral directors; photography studios and auction houses.

– What happens if I break the rules?

You can be told to put on a face covering or leave the premises by police or transport officers. Police officers can escort someone from a building for refusing to follow the rules and can use reasonable force if necessary. You could be fined £100, reduced to £50 if paid within 14 days, or even prosecuted.

– How long will the rules be in force?

The rules must be reviewed by the Government within six months of the law being brought into force, which is January 24 2021. Ultimately the law expires after a year unless the Government scraps it beforehand.

But opinion polls suggest the majority support the change, which will bring England into line with many countries around the world, including France, Germany and Spain.

Health Secretary Matt Hancock said the move was essential for preventing a second wave of coronavirus while continuing to open up the economy.

Today’s move completes a U-turn by the Government which initially said masks were ineffective in halting the spread of the virus.

Masks have been compulsory on public transport since July 15 after evolving scientific advice suggested they could help stop Covid sufferers without symptoms from spreading the disease.

The new guidance states face coverings will be required in takeaway sandwich shops like Pret a Manger.

Customers who queue for a sandwich can take off their mask to eat it if they find a seat, although Government sources said the practice should be discouraged.

Entertainment venues and services are not covered by the new rules which state pubs and restaurants will be exempt, as will hairdressers, gyms, leisure centres, cinemas and museums.

However, several leading supermarkets and coffee shop chains including Sainsbury’s, Asda, Co-op and Costa Coffee have said they will not enforce the rule if customers try to enter without a mask. They said it is up to police to make sure people comply.

Sainsbury’s told The Daily Telegraph that while it was asking everyone to continue ‘playing their part’ by following the rules, ‘our colleagues will not be responsible for enforcing them’. Union leaders have also voiced fears that the new rules on face coverings could put workers’ safety at risk.

TUC general secretary Frances O’Grady said: ‘Verbal and physical abuse [of shop staff] rose during the pandemic, and the new rules requiring shoppers to wear masks may further risk staff safety.’

The Prime Minister’s spokesman said: ‘You’ve seen over recent months the British public have voluntarily chosen to follow the guidance because they want to help slow the spread of the virus and I’m sure that will be the case with face coverings as well.’

Police can hand out £100 fines to people in shops, shopping centres, banks, takeaway outlets, post offices, sandwich shops and supermarkets who flout the rules, but the College of Policing has said officers ‘should only be required as a last resort’.

Guidance issued by the Government yesterday for England confirmed face coverings in takeaways would be mandatory, after weeks of confusion and varied messaging from ministers.

It states that staff in premises where face coverings are required are encouraged to ‘take reasonable steps to promote compliance with the law’ and can refuse entry to people who do not have a valid exemption under the rules.

Retail and trade organisations criticised the Government for taking so long to publish the new laws and guidance, having announced the measure more than a week ago, while union leaders voiced fears the rules could put workers’ safety at risk if there are abusive customers or people who refuse to wear a mask.

Costa Coffee said it would ‘not be challenging customers’ who are not wearing a mask ‘since they may have a legitimate reason as to why they are unable to wear one’.

Sainsbury’s said while it is asking everyone to continue ‘playing their part’ in helping to keep everyone safe in store by following the rules, ‘our colleagues will not be responsible for enforcing them’.

Asda said it will ‘strongly encourage customers to wear a face covering’, but added: ‘It is the responsibility of the relevant authorities to police and enforce the new rules.’

Tesco will be selling face coverings at the entrance and Waitrose said staff would be at the entrance to stores reminding customers of the requirement.

Customers will be ‘required’ to wear a face covering in Greggs.

Alan Gregg claimed he was at a Tesco store in Balby, South Yorkshire, at 6am for shopping this morning, ‘and the lady at the door said to me face masks are not compulsory in this store’. Tesco has been contacted for comment

McDonald’s said takeaway customers will need to wear face coverings but those who eat in the restaurant will not unless they are moving around the premises, for example to use toilets or when at self-order screens.

The British Retail Consortium called on customers to be ‘respectful’ of the new rules and criticised the length of time taken for the guidance to be published.

UKHospitality chief executive Kate Nicholls said takeaway outlets had been left with ‘a very short time to properly brief staff, prepare signage and take steps to encourage compliance’.

The British Medical Association said while the guidance is helpful, it has come late in the day.

Dr Chaand Nagpaul, the association’s council chairman, said the measures were ‘long overdue’ and added ‘the uncertainty of recent weeks has done nothing to inspire public confidence’.

Venues like restaurants, pubs, gyms, hairdressers, beauty salons, leisure centres, cinemas, concert halls and theatres are exempt from the new rules.

Dr Nagpaul warned the virus ‘does not discriminate between buildings’ and said there must be ‘an absolute assurance’ that other mitigating measures are in place at those sites, such as screens and physical distancing.

Other exemptions to face coverings include children under 11, people with breathing problems and anyone who cannot put on, wear or remove a face covering because of a physical or mental illness or impairment or disability.

The guidance states that people should ‘assume’ it is standard to wear a face covering when visiting a hospital, GP, care home or other primary or community healthcare setting.

Last week police chiefs were blindsided by the Government’s announcement after they were not told in advance of the plans and some police chiefs warned there are not the resources to patrol the aisles.

The Police Federation of England and Wales, which represents rank-and-file officers, said it was ‘unrealistic and unfair’ to expect them to patrol the aisles looking for people breaking the coronavirus regulations.

Metropolitan Police Commissioner Dame Cressida Dick said she hoped shoppers who refuse to wear masks would be ‘shamed’ into compliance.

The Government said the responsibility for wearing a face covering ‘sits with individuals’, adding: ‘Businesses are encouraged to take reasonable steps to encourage customers to follow the law, including through signs and providing other information in store.’

The Prime Minister’s official spokesman told reporters yesterday: ‘With shops, we would expect them to give advice to customers and remind them that they should be wearing a face covering and I’m sure the overwhelming majority of the public will do so.’

The laws could be in place until at least January, and could even last a year, unless the Government decides to scrap them in the meantime.

Face coverings are already mandatory in shops in Scotland and will be compulsory in shops in Northern Ireland from August 1.

BizTalk Arlington - O.K. Carter Notes For The Arlington On Tap Segment - April 25th 3-4pm

Radio Show notes April 25

Local politics warming up

Early voting started yesterday and things are already warming up politically, though not because of the election but with consequences that may affect the election. It’s all about smoking. The Arlington Council passed a toughened smoking ordinance on a first reading two weeks ago 6-3, leaving bingo halls alone but eliminating smoking from most other places…sexually oriented businesses (if you can still find one here in Puritan City), pool halls and bars. The council is supposed to vote on it tonight in what is normally a routine second reading item on the consent agenda, which means they wouldn’t even talk about it.

Since then the nightclub industry and the vaping people have suddenly figured out what’s afoot and gone a little bonkers. The saloon crowd quickly gathered what’s reported to be a 1,500-signature petition protesting the ordinance change. The Arlington Republican Club voted more than 60 percent against the ordinance.

So many people showed up with the big petition last week that they overloaded the City Hall Elevator and it stalled.

Long story made shorter, expect quite a crowd at City Hall tonight asking the council to reconsider the ordinance change. Everybody involved is being lobbied…more proof that no matter what happens in the world, somebody’s ox gets gored.

What will happen is anybody’s guess but don’t be surprised if the whole thing ends up tabled until after the election May 6.

Writer and Pundit Donna Darovich to wrap up Arlington on Tap season

Humorist, satirist and author Donna Darovich will close out the current Arlington on Tap downtown happy hour and lecture series with a nostalgic and funny recollection:The Life and Times of the Old-Time Fabulous Arlington Citizen-Journal.

Save the date: May 9, 6 p.m. to 8 p.m., Maverick’s Bar and Grill, 601 E. Main St.

“Before the world of social media and before the C-J was essentially blended into what is now the Arlington Star-Telegram, the Citizen-Journal dominated the role of informational gate keeper for what was important – or not – in suburban boomtown Arlington,” said Darovich. “The paper had a terrific run from 1897 until the 1990s.”

About that Eastern Star property, all 28.5 acres of it

We talked about the school district buying the property just south of AT&T Field for a 2,500-seat performing arts center but the district also has athletic plans…happened to sit next to a school board member at a recent event…as we guessed one of the athletic facilities will be an Olympic-rated pool, a natatorium. It also appears this will be the main gymnastics venue for the district and quite likely will also include a facility for increasingly popular wrestling that can be utilized for other activities.

By the way there’s also going to be a 500-seat blackbox theater that will be used for both district and community performance events.

Does the district need 28.5 acres? My source said no…that they’ll probably eventually sell 20 or so acres and put it back on the tax market. No doubt there are already investors looking at that, hoping to glom onto higher traffic expected from a new enclosed Texas Rangers Ballpark and all the activity the Texas Live Complex is expected to generate.

IT’s ALL IN THE LIGHT

The American Society of Mass Spectrometry has named UTA chemistry professor Saiful Chowdhury (Sah-full Chowd – hurry) as one of the leading emerging investigators worldwide work developing new techniques using mass spectrometry to differentiate protein modifications linked to cancer and aging. Chowdhury has developed new strategies using spectrometry biomarkers for things like leukemia, pancreatic and colon cancers; genetic- and aging-related illnesses, along with parasitic, bacterial and viral infections. He says new technique is an easy an inexpensive easy and inexpensive way to make precise diagnosis and there marker make it possible to design very specific treatment strategies instead of the old scattergun throw all kinds of chemo and radiation at it. Very cool

Road Closures downtown for up to a month…be patient

▪Mesquite Street, from UTA Boulevard/Border Street to Front Street

StageCraft Friends of the Duncan seek smaller performing arts venue

Something musicians, dancers, speakers and theatrical performers need in Arlington is a small, affordable venue…a new group – StageCraft Friends of the Duncan -- is forming that aims to collaborate with the city to use the Duncan Center in Vandergriff Park…the idea is that the group would buy portable risers to create theater-style seating and also replace the center’s lighting and audio systems (all of which is now more than three decades old)…The venue would seat about 200…pretty cool idea. Interested parties include Miss Persis School of Dance, American Jazz Performers of Arlington, Arlington Master Chorale, Timeless Concerts, Dance Theatre of Arlington, Arlington Music Teachers’ Association, the Arlington Community Band, the Barbershop Quartet, Gown Town Theater and I Am! Among others. Since the risers are portable, the center would still be useable for other purposes.

Tiny House fever on the UTA campus…Davis south of Abram

In the shadows of much larger construction projects like the Science and Engineering Innovation and Research Building and residence hall-dining hall-parking garage projects on the west side of campus, a smaller development is taking shape that molds student minds as they head out into the professional world.

Students from the College of Architecture, Planning and Public Affairs are building tiny houses as their senior design projects on Davis Street, between Greek Row Boulevard and UTA Boulevard.

How small?

One house is only 360 square feet and the other dwarfs the first coming in at 390 square feet. In their coursework, faculty and students are calling the structures micro houses.

The units will be sold once completed, proceeds be used for future projects…so it’s a good opportunity to buy one, but might want to check local zoning regs first.

Maybe you don’t want a single family residence, even a tiny house? Pretty soon you can check out The chocolate-brown complex on Lamar Boulevard north of Interstate 30 (between Cooper and Collins near Rolling Hills Golf Club) that’s been taking shape for about a year.

The four-story structure occupies land that once was home to three blighted apartment complexes built in the 1970s.

It’s the first phase of the Arlington Commons, an upscale apartment complex that will be marketed to young urban professionals…i.e. millennials who often prefer lifestyles not requiring a lawnmower. It will feature big balconies and a roughly 450-space parking garage that the apartment building wraps around, almost hiding it from view. It will provide close parking spaces for tenants on the upper levels. Lots of downsizing seniors also seem to be interested. Pre-leasing starts in May, with the first occupancy in August.

Where is it:425 E. Lamar Blvd., on the north side of Lamar, between Ryan Plaza and Van Buren drives.

The $50 million first phase sits on 5.6 acres of the 24-acre site. The four-phase, $200 million project would be built over the next 10 years with at least the originally planned 1,328 units---year that’s a lot of units. School district probably going nuts about it.

Hall of Famer coming to Town

Emmitt Smith will be keynote speaker at The Salvation Army’s AnnualInspiring Hopefundraising luncheon on Wednesday, May 3 at AT&T Stadium in Arlington.

The NFL’s all-time leading rusher and Pro Football Hall-of-Famer helped win three Super Bowl championships as a member of the Dallas Cowboys. Smith’s football life actually began when he played on a youth football team at The Salvation Army when he was eight years old.

Like most children who lived nearby, Smith went to The Salvation Army every day after school. The organization provided a place for kids to gather, make friends and participate in activities they couldn’t afford to do otherwise.

National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health concludes no connection between Nichols, health claims

The Arlington school district says there’s been significant misinformation with respect to Nichols Junior High School. They’ve provided a list of entities they collaborated with…Tarrant County Public Health Department; Environmental Protection Agency, Arlington Fire Department, and independent experts (Armstrong Forensic Laboratory, Inc.; EFI Global Engineering, Fire and Environmental Services; Engineered Air Balance Company, and; Estes McClure, and Associates), and now National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), on behalf of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, have all tested and/or reviewed the tests and have concluded that there is no credible evidence that Nichols Junior High has caused anyone’s illnesses. They say the threatened lawsuit has no data to support claims of harm. No doubt this will all continue for a while.

RANGERS START FAST BUT LOSE FASTER…more than 48,000 showed up for sold out opening day Rangers vs. Indians yesterday…despite a pair of homers by Rougned Odor (just signed six year $49.5 million deal and clearly feeling good about it) and a rainmaker by Carlos Gomez the Indians came backwith three runs in the ninth to take it 8-5. Next to Odor’s homers, the highlight of the game came before the game when bench coach Tony Beasley, who was diagnosed with stage 2 cancer last season, belted out the National Anthem to wild cheers from the fans. Doing great and appears to be out of danger.

By the way, S-T columnist Mac Engel opined after the game that starting pitcher Yu Darvich just doesn’t have it and that the Rangers should get something for him while they can…pretty tough view for one game.

TV announcers….stay at home viewers probably noticed non-presence of Steve Busby (anybody out there got an opinion on the move), who Rangers decided to depart with last October. Dave Raymond will serve as the primary play-by-play announcer on the Fox Sports Southwest broadcasts. Tom Grieve returns for his 23rd season as the Rangers' TV analyst and will work with Raymond and former major league pitcher C.J. Nitkowski, who joins the club as a TV analyst and is expected to work about 100 regular-season games this year.

Emily Jones again will be the primary field reporter when she’s not doing auto ads. This is her 10th year.

Rounding out the groupare Eric Nadel and Matt Hicks, who return as the club's radio broadcast team onKRLD-FM 105.3 The Fan. Nadel begins his 39th year as a Rangers broadcaster.

NO SMOKING VOTE COMING UP…A proposal to further tighten smoking regulations will go to the City Council for a vote April 11. The ordinance amendment would ban smoking in bars, pool halls, bingo parlors, bowling centers and sexually oriented businesses, all of which are now exempted. Exceptions for designated smoking areas in workplaces also would be removed, and e-cigarettes would be regulated the same as their tobacco counterparts.

There are 12 bingo parlors with Arlington addresses (Moose, Benbrook Cops, etc)…some concern that charitable donations from parlors (1980 law legalizing bingo requires such contributions)…$26 million in Texas last year. Many bingo parlors use 90 percent of proceeds for payoffs, so often not much money left. Expected to pass…chief opponents seem to be Councilmen Charlie Parker and Robert Shepard who worry a smoking ban would run the handful of pool and bingo halls out of business and displace their workers. They weren’t swayed by arguments that Arlington’s restaurants flourished under the 1991 smoking ordinance when many feared they would flee the city.

Hervey, the Sun Belt Player of the Year, is the only player from the Sun Belt Conference and one of just four players from programs in the state of Texas to earn recognition from the Associated Press. More good news…he’s a junior coming back next year to lead a team that was 2-1 in the NIT while racking up a 27-9 record, including a 14-1 mark at home…pretty cool.
