Loss was set at $14,000. Joey Hughes, 9, son of Harold Hughes, ran into the house with his trousers burning yelling that he set the barn afire. It was believed the boy was burning trash near the buildings. Hughes said tractor, grain drill, 700 bushels of oats, five tons of hay and six tons of straw were lost in the fire. Cohocton Man Dies Of Crash Injuries Earl D.

Fairbrother, 69, Cohocton, died yesterday in Lakeview Memorial Hospital, Bath, of injuries received in an auto accident last Tuesday in Cohocton. No New Clues Found In Baby's Slaying No new developments were reported yesterday in the investigation of the slaying of a new-born baby found dead in Springbrook Cemetery, near Seneca Falls, Saturday, It was believed the baby had been dead four to six weeks. Multiple fractures of the skull caused the baby's death. Joseph Achilles Dies; Orleans Historian Joseph B. Achilles, 80, Orleans County historian for the past 15 years, died yesterday while asleep in his room in Albion.

As historian he often provided material for writers, including Arch Merrill of The Democrate and Chronicle. A native of Albion, Mr. Achilles was manager of the old Home Telephone later a part of the present New York Telephone in the early 1900's. Man Charged With Smuggling Saw into 'Pen' Charged with endangering the safety and security of the Monroe County Penitentiary by smuggling in a hacksaw blade, Charles, pleaded Carper, 39, innocent of in Gladwin, City Court yesterday and was ordered held for the Grand Jury. The incident allegedly occurred last August, but the warrant for Carper's arrest was not issued until the past weekend when he was released from the penitentiary after serving a sentence for intoxication.

He has been arrested 15 times for intoxication since October, 1956. Carper is accused of smuggling the 12-inch hacksaw blade into the pen the week of Aug. 6. Sam Houston, deputy superintendent at the penitentiary, said Carper told him he found the blade while on a farm work detail. The blade was smuggled into the cell.

No attempt had been made to use the blade on any bars, Houston said. Fire Officers Led by John Hoffer of Pittsford was elected president of the Monroe County Fire District Officers Assn. at the annual meeting in Spencerport. He replaces Eric Hammer of Brighton. It was announced by John Coghlin, Rochester fire headquarters radio communications officer, that the city has set up a card file to handle county fire calls. When a fire call from the county comes into the city as many do, a reference to the file will spot the location and a call can be quickly radioed to the nearest fire company. Driver Without License Fined $50 for Hit-Run An unlicensed motorist received a $50 fine and a 30- suspended term in Monroe County Penitentiary yes- day terday after he pleaded guilty Leo T. Suits in Fatal Crash Settled for $20,000 Suits over death of a 5-year-Jing old girl and injuries to two other children and three women when a truck hit the rear of a car in which they were picnic-bound July 18, 1956, in Manitou Road near Curtis Road, Greece, were settled yesterday for $20,000. The compromise was approved by Supreme Court Justice James C. O'Brien.

The suits were against Anthony Giorgi, 88 Prospect Robert H. Schmidt, Macedon. Giorgi was owner and Schmidt driver of a dump truck laden with stone that rammed the automobile owned by Joseph T. Lubanski, 163 Seward and driven by his wife, Mrs. Ruth E.

Lubanski. The women and children were headed for Hamlin Beach State Park. Christine M. Durbin, 5, of 172 Seward died of her injuries six days later in Strong Memorial Hospital without regain- consciousness. Suit of her father, Richard W.

Durbin, as administrator of her estate was settled for $7,500. Christine's mother Mrs. Esther B. Durbin, who suffered a fractured skull and other, injuries, accepted $6,500. Mrs.

Suits of Mrs. Lubanski and her two children, Marie, 5, and who were less seriously, Lubanski's injured, husband, and of Mrs. who sued for hospital and medical expenses of his wife and children, were settled for $4,000. They were represented by Rosario J. Guglielmino.

Mrs. Lubanski received $1,200, her husband $1,700, Marie $600 and William $500. Florida Escapee's Return Ordered by County Judge A 25-year-old Florida man who last June escaped from the Glades State Prison Farm in Florida while serving a 15-year term for armed robbery, was returned to Florida yesterday by prison agents through County Court extradition proceedings, He is Samuel Hollis of Fort Lauderdale, who was sentenced last February and escaped in June. He was picked up as a fugitive by agents of the Federal Bureau of Investigation Oct. 14 in Lyons.

After several adjournments in County Court here, in which the prisoner was informed of his rights, and was assigned Reuben K. Davis as his attorney, the courtappointed counsel informed Judge Clarence J. Henry there would be no basis for bringing a habeas corpus proceeding to test the validity of the extradition. Judge Henry ordered the unwilling but uncontesting Hollis delivered from the County Jail to two agents of the Florida Prison Division from Tallahassee. They were on their way to Florida late yesterday.

The government says the illegal sales were made to U.S. Food and Drug Administration agents from 1954-56. Death Ruling Given By Coroner Danehy A certificate of suicide while temporarily insane was issued by Coroner Cornelius P. Danehy yesterday in connection with the death of Robert J. Thorne, 43, of 9 Granger who was found dead in his car Sunday night.

Investigators said a vacuum cleaner hose was found running from the exhaust pipe to a side window of the car, parked in an Elton Street lot. Insurance Agents Praise Fire Inspection Program Rochester Fire Bureau cials, their were "most praised yesterday and progressive forward-looking program" that calls for intensive neighborhood inspections by fire company personnel, starting Jan. 15.
